The restoration and expansion of the existing Hotel LA, located in Petrie Terrace, includes the refurbishment of the existing heritage building and a new short-term accommodation building with a rooftop terrace. The striking architecture was designed by Ellivo, and enhanced through the landscape architecture.

Cactus and Hill’s aim is to help increase patronage and visitors in support of local business, by creating a desirable precinct which for hotel guests, evokes a sense of place, a home away from home.

The design focuses on enhancing the heritage setting of the existing building, whilst establishing a defined entry to welcome guests into the new hotel and a rooftop terrace. The design of the rooftop bar emphasises its outstanding views towards the city, South Brisbane and Mt Coot-tha. It also creates a variety of comfortable spaces for a range of small and large groups and private event areas, to promote social interaction and exchange. Soft landscaping creates a beautiful, lush environment which embodies the built form, blurring the distinction between hardscape and soft-scape elements. Walls, screens and a retractable roof create a unique setting and enhance climatic comfort for year-round use.

A contemporary planting palette, comprising of a melody of hardy plant species in different shades of green, variation in texture, leaf shapes and plant forms creates interest. The design includes a balance between height and depth, using rich green climbing vines and spreading lush ground covers. The design is climatically-responsive to provide comfortable year-round use, balancing heat, cold, sun, glare, shade and wind.

Cactus and Hill’s design strategy aligned with the client’s overall goal of increasing property appeal. We are confident that future visitors of the refurbished and expanded hotel development will enjoy a unique environment.
