Highgate Hill is an historic and thriving suburb in the heart of Brisbane. In 2013, Landscape Architect group, Cactus and Hill provided Landscape Design services to Torbreck Home Units. Designed by Aubrey Job and Robert Froud, Torbreck Home Units was the first high-rise building in Queensland in 1961. The original landscape design of this heritage-listed, multi-storey development drew combined influence from the works of Roberto Burle Marx and Garret Eckbo, and 1950’s Palm Springs, California, character.

Cactus and Hill’s design strategy redefined the entrance into this historic structure by complimenting the striking 1950’s architectural form of the existing building and communicating this charm at the ground level. By introducing curved geometry and a selection of iconic ‘50’s materials and sculptural planting, the entry way and space was clearly defined to visitors. The contemporary Californian aesthetic was reflected in the detail of the layout, furniture, lighting, and planting elements.

The design aesthetic and quality met the needs of the client by delivering a welcoming entryway that will withstand the test of time as an iconic structure in the heart of Highgate Hill, Brisbane.

The development was constructed in 2014.
